pv panels & battery storage

If you are a commercial level electicity consumer, you can at least halve your on-going power bills, whilst enjoy the many other benefits of generating and storing your own green energy. . . with no capital investment required!

For more information, go to;  POWER PURCHASE AGREEMENTS

roof mounted

By far the most common location for solar PV panels to be located.

Mounting rails are fitted to roof anchors, with the panels then clamped to these rails.  The anchor design will depend on the style of roof (flat, low-slope or pitched), its structure (slate, tile, aluminum, steel, copper or other metal alloys. . . even EPDM, asphalt or bitumen) and, of course, the roof's weight bearing capacity.

Bonus content:  can a solar array span multiple roofs?

Yes, and it is the cumulative energy output to which your Power Purchase Agreement will apply.

If you have several roofs on your property, even if each has a different orientation, a 'Multi String' inverter (also called a multi MPPT inverter) can be employed, with one string for each roof area in order to optimise the system's overall energy output.

Furthermore, if you operate from several disparate business premises, the green energy generated at each location can also be 'virtually combined' for the purpose of a CPPA.

Plus;  roof mounted PV green energy systems rarely require planning permission. . .  and their inaccessibility serves to protect the panels from damage.

ground mounted

The most obvious benefit of ground mounted solar PV park is that the size of an installation is not restricted by available roof space.  A high capacity Photo-Voltaic power plant can be erected in almost any open, unshadowed, area. . .  with each panel individually oriented to optimise its generating performance.

Although ground mounting solar PV panels offers ease of access for construction, maintenance and cleaning, consideration must be given to protecting the panels from accidental damage or vandalism.

battery storage

scalable & flexible solutions

Solwr will design and install a commercial battery bank or BESS (Battery Energy Storage System) on-site, offering your business the ability to store the energy that your solar power plant generates during daylight hours, then discharge this electricity after dark, or when your power demand is high.

Bonus content:  some battery terms, explained;

RATED POWER CAPACITY:  This is the total possible instantaneous discharge capability, in kilowatts (kW) or megawatts (mW) of the BESS, or the maximum rate of discharge that the BESS can achieve, starting from a fully charged state.

SAFETY:  Depending on its design functionality and operating conditions, a BESS can also include a range of safety systems, such as fire control, a smoke detector, a temperature control system, cooling, heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems.

ENERGY CAPACITY:  This term quantifies the maximum amount of energy a battery is able to store;  shown in kilowatt-hours (kWh) or megawatt-hours (mWh).

STORAGE DURATION:  This is the length of time it takes for a battery to fully discharge at its power capacity.  For example, a battery with 1 mW of power capacity and 4 mWh of usable energy capacity will have a storage duration of four hours.

CHARGING CYCLE:  Describes the process of fully charging, then discharging, a battery.  It is used as a metric for the number of times a battery can be recharged and used (cycled) before its performance and capacity decline signifiantly.

SELF-DISCHARGE:  Occurs when the stored charge of the battery reduces as a result of internal chemical reactions. . .  without being discharged.  Because self-discharge reduces the amount of energy available when needed, it is an important factor to consider when selecting battery types intended for long duration applications.

ROUND TRIP EFFICIENCY:  Simply, the ratio of energy charged to the battery, to the energy discharged.

BMS:  'Battery Management Systems' ensure the safety of battery banks.  It monitors the condition of battery cells, measures their parameters and states including state-of-charge (SOC) and state-of-health (SOH), and protects batteries from fires and other hazards.

INVERTER:  This converts Direct Current (DC) output from batteries into Alternating Current (AC) supplied to the facility.  BESS have bi-directional inverters that allow for both charging, and discharging.

There are several battery technologies available, however the current market for battery storage in the UK is dominated by lithium-ion. . .  usually abbreviated to li-on.

Bonus content:  why choose li-ion batteries?

Li-on batteries have the highest energy density of the alternatives, and are able to store up to four times more energy than nickel-cadmium batteries of a comparable size.

Long life:  Li-ion batteries can last in excess of five years, and can withstand up to 3,000 charging cycles.

Low self-discharge:  Li-ion batteries have a low self-discharge rate, losing less than 2% of their stored capacity per month.

Quick charging:  Li-ion batteries can charge and discharge quickly.

Safety:  Li-ion batteries are safe when charged and discharged correctly, according to their operating.

Low maintenance:  Li-ion batteries require very little maintenance and don't need to be periodically discharged.
